In Buddhism, the Brahma Viharas — often called the “four immeasurables” — are described as the four faces of the heart. Like the four directions on a compass, each offers a distinct orientation for how we meet ourselves, others, and the world. Each is both an internal quality of being and an expression of embodied action, something we can consciously practice in everyday living.
The Brahma Viharas are:
• Metta – loving-kindness
• Karuna – compassion
• Mudita – joy for each other's joy
• Upekkha – equanimity
At the heart of this series lies a simple question that can become a guiding light as we navigate the ever-changing landscape of life: How do I face this from my heart? Over the course of five weeks, Liza will lead you to awaken the four faces of your heart through thoughtfully sequenced asana, guided mindfulness practices, and periods of reflection and inquiry. As we explore the Brahma Viharas, you’ll be guided to experience these qualities in your body, observe them in your mind, and notice how they take shape in your relationships and daily life. This blend of asana and philosophy reveals how these timeless qualities support presence, resilience, connection, and ease, both on and off the mat.
This series offers a total of 15 CEUs (10 contact hours + 5 non-contact) for registered yoga teachers to apply toward BYC’s 300-Hr Advanced Yoga Studies Program or Yoga Alliance continuing education hours.
