Backbends ask for openness, but openness alone does not create a strong or sustainable backbending practice. The more demanding the shape, the more we need strength, stability, coordination, and an intelligent relationship between mobility and support. In this four-week series, Christina will guide you through a progressive exploration of the building blocks of backbending, with particular attention to creating stability and freedom in the shoulders and hips and along the spine. Each week will build on the previous session as we develop the strength and awareness needed to distribute movement more effectively throughout the body and approach challenging postures with greater clarity and confidence.
What To Expect
We’ll begin with core stability and belly-down backbends, then explore shoulder mobility and active back arches, hip opening and suspension backbends, and finally bring the pieces together in a session devoted to integration and expansion. Each class will include a range of poses, variations, and progressive strategies so that students can work intelligently at an appropriate level.
Whether you love backbends or find them challenging, this series offers an opportunity to understand them from the inside out and develop a practice that feels strong, spacious, and sustainable.
*This series meets four times over a 5-week span and includes a bye-week — no class the week of Thanksgiving (Wednesday, Nov. 25)
