Sacred Sound, Subtle Power: Vedic Chanting & the Living Language of Sanskrit

with Claudette Evans

May 15 - 17, 2026

In the ancient yogic tradition, sound is not just symbolic — it is foundational. The Sanskrit word śabda means sound, vibration, and truth itself. This weekend immersion invites you into the living practice of Vedic chanting, blending the heart-opening power of mantra with a grounded, accessible approach to Sanskrit language and pronunciation.

Over the course of five modules, we’ll explore sacred sound as a path to clarity, focus, and inner awakening. Each session builds progressively — from examining how sound shapes awareness and studying the structure and purpose of Sanskrit through a Vedic lens, to guided recitation and breath-based repetition. This immersion offers both experiential practice and grounded context, creating a steady pathway into sacred sound as a personal and teachable discipline.

Topics Explored:

• Chanting the Veda •
Chanting offers an immediate doorway into stillness. The rhythm, breath, and repetition help steady the mind, extend the exhale, and anchor awareness. Through the traditional call-and-response method of adhyāyanam (teacher recites, student repeats) you’ll experience this meditative effect firsthand.

• Language of Creation: Sanskrit
More than a language, sanskrit is said to be a vibrational blueprint for the cosmos. The 49 root sounds of the Sanskrit alphabet are considered Mātṛkā-śakti, subtle energies from which all form arises. Honoring this sonic structure preserves the potency and purpose of Vedic mantra.

• Sanskrit Foundations & Pronunciation •
We’ll revisit Sanskrit’s history and purpose through a Vedic lens, focusing on accurate sound production and foundational grammar. This segment supports both clarity in chanting and respectful integration into modern yoga and spiritual teaching.

• Sūktam Study & Recitation Practice •
You’ll be guided in learning and reciting three essential hymns (sūktam) from the Veda; Śraddhā Sūktam, Agni Sūktam, and Medhā Sūktam. On their own, each is a powerful tool for aligning inner intention with outer expression. Together, they form a foundation for awakening to your true purpose.

Who is This For?

This immersion is designed for experienced yoga teachers as well as curious seekers drawn toward the spiritual roots of yoga through the transformative power of sound. When offered with care and clarity, chanting becomes a gateway to transformation — supporting personal sādhana and enriching the yoga you share with others.

Spanning five 3-hour in-person modules, the structure of this training allows for steady repetition and integration. Rather than approaching Sanskrit and mantra from an academic standpoint, this immersion emphasizes the practice of embodied listening, precise sound production, and presence through voice.

Whether you are ready to integrate Vedic sound into your teaching or simply deepen your personal sādhana, this weekend offers a luminous, accessible foundation for the path ahead.

There are a total of 20 CEUs (15 Contact Hours with an optional 5 Non-Contact Hours available) for registered yoga teachers to apply toward BYC’s 300-Hr Advanced Yoga Studies Program or Yoga Alliance continuing education hours.
